In-Chair vs Take-Home - Teeth Whitening Demystified

What is the difference between teeth whitening treatments done in-chair vs take-home?

Teeth whitening can be done in two different ways: in-chair or at-home/take-home. The in-chair treatment is priced at a premium as it requires the supervision of a dentist during the whitening process - this is due to the higher concentration of whitening agent being used.

The at-home/take-home treatment option is done over a longer period of time and has it’s advantages and drawbacks compared to the in-chair treatment option. Advantages include better whitening results as the whitening agent is applied for a longer period of time and at regular intervals. Drawbacks are that it requires a strict routine for best results. In-chair whitening is often preferred by anyone wanting quick results without the need to adhere to a regular schedule.

It’s generally recommended that both in-chair and take-home treatment options are done together to get the best results. The in-chair treatment kickstarts the whitening process and it’s improved in a sustained manner through the ongoing take-home treatment.
