Dental Implants

What are Dental Implants?

A dental implants are titanium metal screws that replaces the root of a tooth. Dental implants are securely placed into the jaw bone with a dental crown placed on top. This makes the dental implant appear like a natural tooth.

Is a dental implant the best option for me?

If you’ve lost a tooth then you might benefit from a dental implant - a dental implant is the gold standard for replacing a lost tooth. The advantages of a dental implant are:

  • It is a stand-alone tooth replacing the root and crown of your natural tooth

  • It does not require cutting or drilling of any neighbouring teeth (unlike a Dental Bridge)

  • It does not place any pressure on neighbouring teeth (unlike a Denture)

  • It is fixed in position (you do not need to remove it at night, like you would a Denture)

One thing to keep in mind is that as you lose teeth, the teeth on either side can shift adding more pressure on your remaining teeth. This can can wear them away quickly and cause other dental problems such as sensitivity to hot and cold liquids as well as chipping and fracturing of teeth.

What is the process of getting a dental implant?

Step 1) The first step of assessing whether you are able to get a dental implant is for one our Dentists to review your medical and dental history to ensure there isn’t anything that could impact on your ability to get a dental implant.

Then a comprehensive dental exam will be completed where we:

  • Take X-rays of you teeth and jaw

  • Take 3D scans of your teeth to produce a 3D image

  • Make models of your teeth and jaw

From the results of the above, we will be able to then inform you if a dental implant is suitable for you and walk you through a tailored treatment plan. If your case is complicated, we will refer you to our preferred Australian trained and qualified oral specialists in Werribee for the placement of the dental implant (step 2) and will see you back at Hogans Road Dental for the placement of the crown (step 3 onwards).

Step 2) At the next appointment we will surgically place the titanium implant screw in your jaw bone.

After this appointment the jawbone needs to be allowed to heal and interlock with the dental implant and this typically takes around 4-6 months.

Step 3) One the dental implant is securely interlocked with your jaw we will then prepare the implant for placing the final crown. This involves removing the gums around the implant and placing a healing cap (a small cap on top the implant screw). The gums are then allowed to heal for around 2 weeks.

Step 4) Once the gums have healed, we will take moulds of the of your teeth again to get the final dental crown made.

Step 5) This will be your final appointment! We will place the dental crown to your implant screw and you can leave with a smile on your face!

Where do we source our dental implants from? Are they high quality?

This is a very good question to ask from any dental implant provider. This is because prices quoted for dental implants can vary with the brand and type of implant used. At Hogans Road Dental we use MIS Implants, a leading American manufacturer and global supplier of dental implants. They have more than 25 years experience in manufacturing precision dental implants. So What are our dental implant prices?

Our dental implants are priced from $3500 to $5000. The reason for a range is that each implant is unique and have factors that affect whether additional procedures are needed prior to placing the dental implant. These factors include:

  • Where the tooth is located and its’ proximity to dental nerves

  • Whether bone grafting is required

  • Whether sinuses are required to be lifted

  • If osseointegration (implant interlocking with the jaw) was successful

  • If grafting of soft tissue is required

  • The number of implants needed i.e. single implant, bridge or entire jaw (All-on-4)

The price includes the full cost of the final crown.
