Extractions

Where possible we make every effort to save your natural teeth but a tooth may need to be extracted when there is:

  • Unrepairable damage to the tooth

  • Loose teeth from periodontal disease

  • Deep cracks and fractures

  • Recurring infection from wisdom teeth

What should I expect during an extraction?

  • We will assess your medical history to ensure there are no issues with performing an extraction

  • An x-ray of the tooth is taken to help plan the best way to remove the tooth

  • We always use an anaesthetic and check to see your are 100% numb and comfortable before we begin

  • A simple extraction will involve the tooth being loosened with an instrument and removed in one piece

  • A surgical extraction is more complex and usually done on badly broken teeth

  • During the extraction process you should expect to feel pressure, but no pain

Wisdom teeth

Wisdom teeth often do not have any room to fully come through the gum. This can cause problems such as infection, decay and damage to neighbouring teeth. Possible signs of an infected wisdom tooth are:

  • Red and swollen gums alongside the wisdom tooth

  • Pus from the gum line

  • Difficulty opening your mouth and swallowing

  • Pain

  • Fever

Some wisdom teeth can be positioned deep inside the jaw bone, next to a nerve or entangled in one. In these cases, we may refer you to a specialist. Visit our Wisdom Teeth Removal page for more information.
